VPZ Expat Insurance
Your health insurance abroad
If you are living in the Netherlands and take holidays abroad then you will remain insured by the AWBZ as well as the Health Insurance Act, unless you start working abroad.
The basic insurance cover is not limited to the Netherlands. Your health insurer may also reimburse healthcare costs incurred abroad. However, the level of reimbursement will be limited by the tariffs applicable in the Netherlands or as described in your policy. There is therefore a real possibility that costs will either not be covered by the basic insurance or not covered in full; an additional insurance and travel insurance will therefore still be required.
The Netherlands has concluded international agreements with a large number of countries regarding the provision of medical care to each others' policyholders. These countries include EU / EEA countries and treaty countries. The costs of medical care provided to you in one of these countries will be reimbursed in retrospect by the Netherlands (and vice versa). However, this will only come into effect once an administrative process has been conducted.
VPZ is a specialist in implementing these administrative processes.
